A cure for blisters

When I was younger, I played a lot of football (soccer to our American cousins) and as a result, I developed very hard skin on the soles of my feet. Although it was fairly unattractive, it did the trick and I never once suffered from blisters.
It is now ten years later, and I haven't done much exercise for the past couple of years. My feet are now soft and smooth once more, however every single time I run around for more than an hour, the skin blisters and simply falls off the soles of my feet!
Is there anything I can do to quickly toughen them up?
A friend told me that soldiers during the war used to soak their feet in urine (!) to stop the blisters caused by all the marching. Is this true, or is he just trying to make me look and idiot?
Does anyone have any alternatives?

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.I found that washing them too often doesnt allow the skin to toughen...I used to practice in bare feet on wooden floor.....I used to wash the top of them with a damp cloth and inbetween the toes similarly but left the sole alone. It worked a treat...have passed this on to others and they came back and said it worked for them too. inotherwords dont wash the soles every day (could be a problem if u use a shower though????
I know it doesn't help much, but I get blisters a lot on my fingers from tying my figure skates. The only thing I've found that really works for me is tying my skates up, even if I'm not on the ice, at least every other day. At first it was so painfull... well you don;t want to know. Anyway, I would just run a lot to build up the thoughness again. But I'm going to try all the other suggestions, thanks!
