In A Pickle's answer is fine if:
(a) you're near to a computer ; and
(b) you're online ; and
(c) the places you want to measure the distance between are town or villages in the AA database.
It doesn't help much if you're fell-walking and you need to know the distance, from the Ordnance Survey map in your rucksack, between two trig points ;-)
You need a digital map measure, like one of these:
http://www.camperlands.co.uk/store/erol.html#2 9683x0&&
http://www.claritas-online.co.uk/products/prod uct_pages/misc/44.html
http://www.timani-ltd.co.uk/index.php?main_pag e=product_info&products_id=93
(Note that the first two, above, require you to calculate the real distance. The last one appears to do the calculations for you).
