Argos furniture description.

We're thinking of getting some furniture out of Argos. It's described as "framed furniture in real oak or walnut wood veneer". Does this mean that the furniture is made from proper wood? If anyone were checking it out its on page 192 of their home book.

Cleversod's right styley - and be careful that you don't buy a leather suite from Argos. They're the ones that're imported, and give off noxious fumes!

you basically get what you pay for. Vaneered furniture is much cheaper and gives you a similar look to the real thing. It wont last as long but can be ok and serve the purpose it is designed for. A lot of furniture is veneer but most people dont even notice if it is good quality.

Ice maiden, it was not noxious fumes that was the problem but a skin reaction to something in the leather - I saw a news report on it and they said that any affected furniture has been recalled so probably safe again now.

True, but they do if they're looking for good quality in the first place.

Gosh - you're right, I'm sorry (about the fumes). Lol - well I knew it had something to do with furniture that Argos was selling, and yes, it's probably somewhat better now....probably. Personally, I wouldn't ever buy furniture from there. There was a brown leather settee on display in a local store. I sat on it, and sank right down. The cushion filling was rubbish, and the stitching round the leather pieces was dubious. Far better to invest in something good, which lasts.

Cleversod - yes, land of leather were also mentioned as well as someone else who I can't remember.

Even very good antique furniture uses veneers -a solid yew or walnut piece of furniture would be prohibitively expensive.

It is what the veneer is on that counts.

Veneer can come in different thicknesses. Really old furniture used hand cut veneers which were a lot thicker than some of today's machine cut veneers which can be very thin indeed.

The veneers were stuck on to cheaper wood, but nowadays it's likely to be stuck on to mdf.

Frankly, if you want quality furniture you are not going to buy it from Argos or pay Argos prices.

Hi Styley, I bought some furniture for my daughter's room a few weeks ago, wardrobe and chest of drawers nearly �200. What a waste of money, they are cr@p,never again, I bought a flat pack chest of drawers from ikea for around �60 and it's quality, a solid piece of furniture that will last for ages. PS the back of the wardrobe from Argos is a piece of cardboard!!!!!. I should have sent the lot back I know but we had just moved home and I couldnt be doing with the hassle !!

it was land of leather and argos that were affected by the toxic sofas, bl@@dy chinese imports. Our suite was from Courts, and expensive it was, but its comfy, well made and still going strong, unlike the retailer!!
