Mative New Yorker here.... I would look outside the tourist areas. However we do have Target store and a K-Mart in Mahattan. They are chain stores that do not specialize in Electronics, but have everything, you can get good stuff and electronics in Target.
Other chains are Circuit City, and Best Buy. Not sure if they are Manhattan though.
Good Luck

Tyler forget that!!!! No Target there yet!!
Best Buy in Manhattan:
on 44th street and 5th avenue
Phone 212 808 0309
on 62nd street and broadway
212 246 9734 phone
again good luck!! Enjoy the visit. i will be in Florida while you are here.
Don't forget that the chargers you buy here may require adapters once you are back home.
As this is a large chain, I do not think they raise prices too much in Manhattan.

Taking Greyhound to Florida?? Loooong trip from NY!!
By surrounding Islands I guess you mean the other boroughs of NYC. I am no expert, but there are parts that are better than others. I would stick to Manhattan for sightseeing, theatre, etc. . You could see a baseball game in Flushing, Queens (The Mets) or a game in The Bronx (Yankees) There also is Flushing Meadows Park an old World's Fair site that has a zoo, science museum and stuff like that. It is on a subway (tube) line #7. Outside of the city we have a great beach named Jones beach which is avaialable by taking the LIRR (Long Island rail Road) or by car.You can sometimes see dolphins there, but ususally later in the summer.
I will be in Disney World, so I won't see ya in Miami.
Safe Travel and let us know the trip goes. I am in Chatterbank a lot, so I'll see you there. I'll check here later if you have last minute questions, I'll try to help.

yeah its a long trip, bout 2 days. gonna take a look at the white house & any other places along the way that people suggest, will definitly check out Jones beach. The bus to Florida is only a fraction of the trip tho, will be going california via texas, then canada via vegas, yosimite, & yellowstone then toronto & back in NC on september 4th so might catch those dolphins after all. I know it sounds mad - it's twice the dictance i travelled 9 years ago in a shorter time. how much is a ticket for disney now? think it was $40 when i went. Hope the weather's good for you.
Although you might get a good deal on a camera & camcorder in NY a few things to consider:-
Do they come with an international guarantee, it will be expensive to return any faulty goods?
If they come with a mains charger, will it operate at 230V, 50Hz and have a UK mains plug?
Any US camcorder is likely to output the TV signal in NTSC format rather than PAL (as used in the UK), check that it is compatible with any equipment you want to use it with, back in the UK.
Officially you are only allowed to bring around 130 worth of goods, duty free back to the UK, you could end up paying import duty on the items.
