What tv should I buy?

I need to but a new tv. What spec should i look for? And are name brands better than 'own makes'?

johnny i just recently bought a samsung 40" lcd hd ready, its lovely swivels round so i can clean it easily, personally i would buy a lcd one rather than a plasma!!!!

Yes, i would stick to the brands you know, rather than unbranded ones. the unbranded ones tend to be rebadged oriental tat and are very poor quality. The picture isnt even good enough to display SD never mind High Definition. and they sound very tinny

big names are safer .....
just go to one of the big outlets ... look at the pictures ....
then go away .... and come back later .... see if it looks as good as you remember.

it's more important to like the picture than the name

I got mine from Asda, + i'm very happy with it, but he's 85,and can't grasp the idea of getting a TV from there x

why not try freecycle in your area? as people 'upgrade' to plasma and lcd atrocities, there are sets which cost hundreds often given away or sold in local small ads for very little.

although size is a potential problem, the picture will almost certainly be better and the CRT sets are far cheaper to repair in general than the throwaway stuff of today!

As regards spec, I have been looking at Argos Bank Holiday deals. As well as the usual gumf like price they also list Resolution , Brightness, Contrast. and HDMI.

Is a resolution 4024x768 better than 1365x768.

Is brightness 1500cd better than 500cd.

Is contrast 2000:1 better then 1000:1

Would i ever need more than I HDMI

Obviously there must be some difference in quality but would I actually notice?

hi, we bought philips 42inch lcd, it is great and only cost us 600quids. comets or currys website have usersguide, you can find all detailed answers about TV.

Errhh no. Supermarket brands arent good value for money, as they tend to be seconds and refurbished models, which is why the ranges in the supermarkets refresh very often.
These lack quality and they also lack a proper guarantee and after-sales service.

Adam, are you talking about supermarket own brands, or supermarket stock generally? I would have though a Sony is a Sony, wherever you buy it. As regards own brands, I have always thought that these were made by the same manufacturers as the main brands. It is easier for them to replicate the models rather than make another one with inferior parts.

adam is mistaken ... the supermarkets have reputations to uphold - they don't sell refurbs. They do however sell on quality or price
generics are cheap ... and brands are quality - but my impression of supermarkets is they are expensive.

forget the spec - go and look at the bl@@dy things ....set a budget .... stick to it.

once you have a couple of possibles ... google to get a good price
