Xbox 360 recommendations

Right. It's taken me a while but I am finally buying my 1st console since the PS2!

Decided on and Xbox 360 Elite and was wondering what you guys would recommend game wise.

I'm a married guy and don't want to be getting it in the neck all the time for constantly playing on it so I don't think any games that will take a life time to finish will be any good! (Even though I know I would enjoy Oblivion!!!)

Not in to racing games so that's a no no.

Will no doubt get PES. I'm a little bit clued up with what is out at the moment and what is coming out soon, but what about 360 games of old? What games have proved themselves?

I've played the original Halo's on the Xbox and don't think I'll bother with Halo 3. Gears Of War looks pretty good though so I might get that.

I could be a lot more thorough with my likes and dislikes but am open to suggestions!

Also (in a purely stereotypical view) what do you think I should get that the missus would like? You know, so she feels part of it!!!

I agree with Trigger, but will add The orange box, Ghost recon advanced war-fighter.

I know you said no racing games but i have been playing Grid almost non stop since may. Mostly online which is a different experience than the offline game playing and something you MUST try

same, but would also recommend Unreal tournament 3, Assassin's Creed, Fifa to PES, Splinter Cell D.A and Viva Pinata for ur wife or some arcade game

agree with the above ghost recon is always a definte but for a laugh with the missus table tennis sounds rubbish but when the missus allows me some xbox time (iv called mine Fluffy and we've grown quite close) we have a bash at table tennis saying that its caused a few rows too
