Childrens programme?

Trying to find the name of a children's programme from the late 80's early 90's. It was about a boy who was sent to an old victorian house. In one of the final episodes he was chased across the lawn by a half man half tree called the green man. Once he had escaped the green man he woke up on christmas day to open a stocking containing nuts, oranges a pen knife and a torch. Does anyone have any ideas or am i mad, thanks. I think he may have been trapped in the house alone. Don't think it was box of delights but i may be wrong.

Thank-you, the link is excellent. Even managed to find the programme about the midnight garden. Its definately the right programme, st christopher with a lightning staff, its the daddy.
