Food safe glaze for painting a dinner plate?

Is there a food safe glaze or type of paint you can buy that can be used for painting onto plates, mugs, bowls etc?

I want to make some personalised dinnerware but can't find out how you can paint onto them so they are safe to eat off of.

Any help/ideas much appreciated!

thanks, but I wasn't going to use one of the kits you can buy. I was going to buy the plates etc and paint myself.
