Further to my previous thread about Tesco Direct ... I buy Tesco Granary bread, and have found that the last two loaves have been ... smaller and squarer !! And no cheaper !!! Talk about cut backs.

Pre packed bread is only sold in 400g and 800g sizes.

However, Tesco are trialling new sizes -300, 600 and 1kg - in some stores. This won't apply to all types of bread and should be clearly marked by weight.

I'm not bothered about the weight, just the size of the slice. Why can't they leave things as they were?
The new sizes might suit me - I'm always throwing away the last few slices from an 800gm loaf 'cos it's gone past its best before date.
So you're getting the same amount of bread for the same price - just different shape?
Question Author
I haven't weighed it but I just want the original larger slices !!
Could you squash it in to shape?
Question Author
If I did that it would make it smaller !! Each slice measures 10cm x 12cm. It used to measure approx 15cm x 11cm. Work it out !!
It appears that Tesco's granary is baked in different shaped tins in different stores. Our local store has the larger slices, but 3 others in the general area produce loaves that are taller, narrower and denser. We avoid those wherever possible!
We buy a couple of loaves at a time, cut each in half & freeze. Then 2 mins in the microwave results in fresh, crisp bread & no need to throw away the end of the loaf.
Rolling pin? Sort of flatten it in to shape?
Do you know of any bread companies that make thin-sliced white bread?
Question Author
Ethel, it would be too thin! Let's face it, it's smaller. I always buy my Tesco Granary at New Malden and it has never been this small before. Sign of the times I suppose.
