Rubbing a wet croc: a most pleasurable experience

My BF, currently sailing back from West France, has just reported having another magical experience with dolphins. He discovered last year (that time in Ireland) that if he rubbed his wet crocs along the hull of the boat, he could communicate with dolphins - they seemed to recognise the sound the crocs made & would squeak back in response.
He's just been doing it again & is so excited - he & a school of dolphins have just had some sort of conversation. I wonder what was being said?
