I'm about to make an evening dress and I want to make it on the bias for a nicer flowing look.  Should I lay the pattern on the fabric on the bias to cut it out?  I know this might sound like the obvious thing to do but I've never made one this way before and want to get it right.

Yes you do.  It's a long time since I made any clothes but I'm sure most patterns advise you on the best way to lay them.

But I'm sure that to make a garment on the bias you need to place the pattern diagonally against the way the fabric is made - i.e on the bias.

thanks for that, I thought that would be right I just wasn't sure about folding it, then you have to cut out then unfold the cut piece.  I was a bit worried that I wouldnt get it right.  wish me luck!!
Maybe you need a pattern that is specifically for cutting on the bias , if the whole garment is cut on the bias maybe the top maybe too stretchy and baggy.
It's a long time since I did any dresssmaking too but I think greenfingers is right - you really need to buy a pattern that's specifically designed to be cut on the bias. Somewhere on the pattern is a bold line that you have parallel to the selvage (finished edge of the fabric), & there should also be a diagram showing you the layout of pattern pieces on the fabric.  Good luck! Are you taking orders?
I agree with greenfingers. You need a bias cut pattern to get the correct fit. Be careful too in getting the hem right as bias cut hems are difficult to keep flat and straight.
