i have heard that any clothing returned to marks's is shredded so that it cannot be re-sold. Does anyone know if this is true or just an urban myth? - like the one that stated that Mc Donalds threw away any food that wasn't sold within five minutes!

Not a definite answer but wonder why you can't return underwear if this is the case?
They do have the most 'slack' returns policy - as long as you have a receipt you are allowed a refund at any length of time - for instance a man bought some trousers returned them 10 years later with original receipt and got his money back.   Good customer service me thinks, not sure how its completely good for business though. I cant imagine the shredding thing is true.
The shredding thing is a myth (imagine the cost!).  The returns policy started when one of the founders (can't remember which one) decided changing rooms were a waste of selling floor space and allowed returns instead.
The shredding of clothes must be a myth, as when I returned a coat to M&S, it went straight back on the rails to be re-sold. I know this because it was immediately reduced in their sale & I re-bought it - naughty but nice!
If clothes are returned because they are faulty then they are returned to the manufacturer (or at least made available to him). They are not resold. If they are returned under the "goodwill" policy, then they must be in saleable condition, and so they are probably resold.

I work in Marks & Spencer, and returned items certainly aren't shredded !! They are all re-sold, and damaged items are either returned to the manufacturer or sold with a soiled and damaged reduction. Anyhting which isn;t sold is then sold to staff in the staff shop.

Regarding the mac donalds chucking food away after 5 mins there is a time limit they can keep a burger etc out and made for before they do put it in the bin, same as burger king!!! i think burger kings is about 20-30mins!! im not so sad that i have asked this but when i was younger i worked in burger king for a yr and macy's for a day!!
