Steam Generator Iron advice please

I've been thinking of getting one of these. My current steam iron was in my opinion quite pricey when I bought it a couple of years back at around £50 (a Bosch) but the darn thing spits water out most of the time. I have looked at reviews & generally they appear good but there are so many & would like to know what people on here think. Also, do you still require an ironing board when using one or can you just hang the clothes & press them that way. Any advice, good or bad would be really useful. thanks

I have recently bought one, and I am very pleased with it. You only need to iron everything once and the creases come out. It makes very light work of the ironing - a job I used to hate. To iron clothes, you still use the ironing board, I believe you can use it upright for curtains etc, but have not used mine for this purpose as yet. The only down size, is that it is a big, bulky item to store, you can't just pop it on the shelf, like an ordinary iron. We have kept our ordinary iron to use when we only want to iron one item, as its not worth setting the steam generator up for one item. Hope this helps.

thanks for your useful reply. What make did you buy? I noticed recently the Russell Hobbs one got good reports. Odd question now! Do you get puddles of water on the floor under the ironing board after you've used it? As I stated in my original post, my Bosch iron is awful at spitting water out & always have to dry the floor after I've used it. Appears this has been a problem with this iron as I've seen several negative reports since buying it about this

It is a Philips GC8220. Now with regards to the steam. There are two options. You can either iron dry and press a button to give a shot of steam when needed, or you can flick a switch to have continuous steam. As it is a steam generator, the steam you get is far stronger and more powerful than a normal iron. I believe this is what makes them so good. It doesn't spit. There are different settings just like a normal iron which you set before you start, as the iron/generator heats to specific temperatures and the light changes to let you know when it is ready for use. Personally, I would never use mine if there were children around, they are very, powerful. Having said that, I am more than happy to tackle a pile of ironing with my new iron. A job I used to hate.

thanks a million for replying again. I will definitely get one & I think the one you have had good reports on a review site. I too hate ironing especially things that never seem to get crease free so looking forward to enjoying it.....well, more than I do at the moment. thanks again
