Out for a ride on my motorbike this afternoon, I approached a section of dual carriageway that had been coned off to one lane, which of course was crawling along at walking pace. The coned off lane was totally empty, no work men, machines, piles of sand, nothing, so I gently eased into it and rode very slowly along it. As I got to the end of the coned off section there was a 'highway maintenance' van parked and as I filtered back into the traffic stream he took a picture of me, then moved behind me, as if he was noting my registration. Was I breaking the law?

yes, at the start of that coned bit there would have been signs that you should have taken notice of.

I hope he does report you and you get nailed for it.
What gives you the right to ignore the cones and drive along a closed lane whilst the rest of us continue to obey the law!!

why didnt you filter on the right hand side instead, that would have been legal and most motorists do pull over for bikes.

Sorry brother not good however you'll probably be ok as those highway guys are not able to prosecute so probably nowt will happen. Take it from me filter as far as you can on the correct side of the cones, if you have to loop one occasionally then do but you can get done. Sit tight I doubt anything will come of it.

Is that true about 'highway maintenance' offices, or whatever they call themselves? They have their vehicles done up like police cars and I've been stuck behind them previously where they drive slowly along the middle lane of the motorway to, I presume, slow other vehicles down. What happens if you overtake them, doing less than the speed limit obviously? Do they have the right to stop you?

They're acting on the advice of the police very often if they do that and so yes you should be prosecuted for ignoring a direction from a person authorised by the police, why would anyone in their right mind try to overtake a safety car on a motorway?????

It's not a safety car, it's a highway car going along the motorway, fair game to overtake unless they are performing some sort of traffic slowing function, then they will be flashing their lights and have a follow me sign.
