Financially - I assume you have a mortgage and therefore no state support with housiing costs... so you might be better off getting some sort of work for 16 hours a week and claiming tax credits. they usually start paying very quickly all being well. This is what I do, as I had to stop my "proper job" some years ago. I work for a well-known cosmetics company, there are similar opportunities, or some casual bar work etc - especially now the students are finishing for the summer.
Hope that is some help.

Check out your local auctioneers. You can often pick up plenty of bargains, which can be sold on eBay.
As an example of what you might find, I'll tell you that I'm posting this message with a fairly modern PC, with loads of memory, a fast processor, separate good quality sound and video cards, a CD drive and separate DVD rewriter. It came with a clean unregistered installation of XP Pro and all the usual accessories (including a flat screen monitor). I bought it at a local auction for just £15!
Auction rooms vary a great deal. I recommend looking in your local Yellow Pages for auctioneers who do house clearances. (That's where you'll find some of the best bargains).
Alternatively you could try one of the auction rooms which specialise in selling trade stocks. (They're often from bankrupt businesses). For example, here's what TLH (in Oldham) were selling earlier today:

are you any good at craft type things? or drawing? my sis is always buying little handmade novelty personalised stuff...like cards with the persons name on it, etc
keyrings, mugs etc
these things are cheap but for that reason they sell faster and many...how much you sell depends on your skills i suppose
if you have any skill buy a few kits to get started and use up any bits and pieces from around the house
