Buying a Mattress
5 Answers
I'm looking to buy a new king size mattress that will go on a pine slatted bed. I have a bad back, but don't find very hard or orthopaedic matresses of benefit.
Each bed shop has their own version of what's best & I honestly don't know who's giving me the best info. Can anyone tell me what I should be looking for and any suggestions for a good buy?

I have a bad back, and the only bed that has truly "helped" had a pretty firm matteres, but with a relativley soft layer (about 3/4" thick) on top, capped off with one of those sheep skin backed matteress toppers.
The effect was that I my spine was being kept pretty much were it should be by the firm bulk of the matteress, but I still had the comfort of the squichier (technical word) top layers, while the sheepskin was divine to sleep on and kept the matteress feeling warm in winter, or reversed to feel cool in summer.
Otherwise I've had pretty good experience with a futon type mattress, although you have to be very careful of having the right number and spacing of slats to use one.
