Removing perma colour gel nail varnish

Hi I recently used a gift voucher to have gel nail varnish applied. The girl was quite unhelpful in the shop and when I asked about removing it she just said 'oh you use acetone' - she seemed more keen that I would go back in and get them to remove and reapply but as I did not find the service good I don't want to go back or contact them. I was sure I would find on the internet exactly how to do this but have not managed to. I have bought the acetone and wonder - am I supposed to just dip my nail into this to then peel off? Any advice would be appreciated.

apply acetone with foam sponge onto nail & rub polish off.
