Not being much of a drinker myself, it does not matter very much to me but.........

The 'better than thy' the 'PC Brigade' and all those 'kill joys' have at last increased the cost of living for all those who after a long day's work, like to chill out with their favourite tipple.

They have increase the cost of putting on a celebrity party / Barbecue etc.

They have increased the cost of getting the Christmas Booze in.

But perhaps this will go the same way as the ban on plastic bags did?

I am a drinker and this infuriates me. Do they honestly think that a slight rise in price will curb underage drinking? And in the meantime whilst this experiment unfolds the rest of us have to pay literally?

They have stopped selling booze at a loss

They have set a minimum price of the duty plus VAT.

In effect they were paying people to drink - that's what they are stopping

That's one big price hike, and I'm quite sure the underage drinkers this is all about aren't getting drunk on martell.

I think it's a bit of a myth that they drink alcopops as well. White lightening and Ace is what they drink. Posh kids drink Strongbow.

ha ha my wife just got me a bottle of brandy from the cash and carry she works for martell vs brandy for £17-90 so stick that asdas,i no where im getting my tipple from now!!!

The duty should be increased as well. We have to try something to change the booze binge culture. If that punishes the responsible drinker (I include myself in that group), well sorry but that's life isn't it - the irresponsible always spoil things for the responsible.

We are told that binge drinking is caused by cheap booze from super markets and some clubs, and that hundreds of pubs close every month. So why doesn't the government slap heavy duty on all these sales and make pubs exempt. We already have different VAT rates on food that is taken away or eaten on the premises so why not have something similar on alcohol . When I was on a tour in Norway a pint of beer was about 5 times the price here. The whole of our tourist group became teetotal. The price of alcohol is a major factor in controlling binge drinking so why is the government so reluctant to act.
