I have to buy a pair of walking shoes. Every time I buy shoes, I seem to get ones where the backs rub the back of my heels, or the sides rub. They seem ok when I try them on in the shop, but as soon as I start wearing them ... ouch.

Has anyone got any recommendations for lovely comfy shoes. Not flip flop style like Birkenstock, but ordinary walking shoes. Thanks everyone.

Tod's loafers. Expensive but soooo comfortable and will last you a good 5 to 10 years depending on usage.
when you say walking shoes, do you mean proper 'walking' shoes like trainer-type things, or smart-ish comfy shoes for doing a lot of tourist-type walking?
i have proper walking boots, and also a pair of walking trainers (which look just like an ordinary pair of trainers), bought from an outdoor shop. the trainers are one size bigger than my normal size and are extremely comfortable. i also have a number of pairs of very comfy flat shoes - lace-up, velcro, slip-on - from various shops, ecco and m & s footglove amongst them.
If you mean walking boots, I have had the same problem until I invested in a pair of Hotter walking boots.
I don't work for them by the way, I'm a Yoga teacher used to bare feet so all shoes have to be VERY comfortable!
I am sure there are other brands that are equally comfortable :0)
my tip would be to buy in the afternoon , and wear them in by wearing for one hour in the morning and one hour in the evening and slowly getting your feet to settle in
i find this has helped me with my safety boots
i would buy them in an outdoor shop like millets or blacks and try them on, I like merrells myself. Maybe its something to do with your feet or the way you walk than the shoes, it might be difficult to get ones to suit your needs but if the backs dig in go for cushoned trainer types, maybe go for a smaller and large size to change what you normally buy, or maybe they have padded walking socks?
I think skechers are meant to be good for that. http://www.uk.skecher...clinical-case-studies
