is it illegal or anything to break off the stalks of fruit/ veg in a supermarket, before they're are weighed, so that they are cheaper, seeing as we rarely use them anyway.

For example brocolli. . . .

I do - asparagus, the middle of mushrooms.
But then, I would.......... ;-)
Shelling the peas and beans before weighing may be pushing it.
The stalk is the best bit of the mushroom!
Well the price includes cost of stalk. I suppose that, even though you are leaving stalk behind you could be accused of altering prices, akin to theft.
Don't stop there molly, Peel the Bananas and Oranges first before you weigh them.
Make sure Manager of Supermarket is not watching though.............
Lol....classic.

I would hazard a guess that the store wouldn't look on it favourably....

The stalk of brocolli is the best bit...
Mmmm.... I would probably draw the line at that!
I eat broccoli stalks
Aren't broccoli stalks a bit hard to break off?
When you buy a joint of meat sold bone in, and ask the butcher to take the bone out, he always prices it bone in.
I find it frustrating when I see someone eating from a bag of grapes that has already been priced up.
Eat the grapes BEFORE weighing. Just take the bag and stalk to the scales when you've finished your shopping trip
I suspect you are not serious but looking at the concept; if we all break off the stalks, the shop still wants to make the same profit so would respond by increasing prices, so you end up not gaining in the long term. The only way you would personally gain was to be the only one doing it and expecting the other better behaved customers to effectively subsidise the price you pay. This sort of act is clearly morally questionable, so I guess it depends on your ethical beliefs as to whether you have a conscience about it, or not.
Another thing you can do while you are in Supermarket molly, Peel all the loose Potatoes so the rest of us Customers can have them cheaper to the Pound !

Don't call me a criminal, it's dad that does it. Even he wouldn't go as far as peeling bananas.
If stuff is advertised for sale by weight, e.g. loose brocolli, or those open bags of grapes, at so-much per kg, then there's nothing illegal in dividing the produce to obtain the weight you want. If it's advertised at price per pack, you can't legally split the pack.
Stalks go in the stockpot, or at the worst, in the compost.
Who called you a criminal?

This doesn't make sense Molly. Your Dad drives a jag...you have 5k in the bank....your Mum doesn't work but can afford to return the money she took from you....sailing..scuba diving...yada yada..

But he your Dad breaks the stalks off broccoli to save a few pennies...!!

it's a small engined, cheap jag, lots of people in my family have popped their cloggs and the interest rate is good, my mums just lazy, she has savings, they were birthday presents, and when i was 13 and 16 respectively, I only got those and a couple of other things, including christmas aswell!
We're missing important information ... Which supermarket is it?
