What is the car and why does this person think your head gasket is on the way out?
There are several symptoms for this and other problems can easilly look like a head gasket failure.
Head gaskets keep oil and water and the cylinders all apart
Normal symtoms are:
Black smoke from exhaust - oil getting into cylinder - but a worn engine can also do this
White smoke from exhaust - water getting into cylinder - cars do this often when starting up initially too - it usuallygoes after a while.
Creamy 'mayonaise' in the oil filler cap - wather and oil mixing - but you can get a bit of this simply from condensation in the air in the engine.
a garage can do a pressure check on the engine which should tell if there's a problem.
Understand the need to avoid a big bill but I wouldn't be pouring odd mixtures in my engine unless I was pretty certain that I had a head gasket leak in the first place
