Singer Sewing Machine

I have a sewing machine that for some reason has stopped working I was sewing a seam when it clogged up with thread and after clearing the thread I now find that the wheel goes round when i press the foot pedal but the needle is not going up and down I have taken it apart and cleaned it but to no avail can any one help please I phoned a local sewing machine repair company and they wanted £60 to look at it . Thank you in advance

If you hold the hand wheel firmly you should be able to rotate the knurled knob by about 1/8 turn. This engages or releases the clutch and enables the motor to be run without moving the needle. It SHOULD be used when winding bobbins (my mum called them spools) for use under the plate for the lower thread. She was taught (and she was a professional machinist) that winding the bobbin with the needle operating was not good for the machine.
thank you bhg but my bobbin winder is a lever on top of the machine and it is not engaged.Singer website got someone to phone me but they told me to get a man in to fix it as it's not something I can do myself . Trouble is finding one that isn't going to cost me more than the machine is worth. local man wanted £60 plus parts. It's a through away age we live in But thanks for trying every one
