Sponsoring a child overseas
9 Answers
I was thinking of sponsoring a child abroad. Does anyone know of any reputable charities that facilitate this? I`m looking for one where the money goes to the child and not to line the pockets of some fatcat charity boss. Thanks

My parent s have done this for years and helped many children. When my sister and I were younger we regularly wrote to the kids and learned a lot about their way of life.

Check out plan-uk.org. I've been with them for a few years and have a sponsored child in Northern India. You will get a photo most years showing you how your child is fairing. Mine has shoes in his photos these days......
And I get a Xmas card every February made from hand made paper with a pressed flower on it. You can send notes and get the occasional one back.
Your monthly payment, mine is now £16 per month, does indeed help the whole community and you will also receive full details and a yearly report on how the charity spends its money in the village where, or near , your sponsored child lives.
I strongly believe child sponsorship is a far better way to help abroad. For a start the money actually gets to where you want it to go. If all of us who can afford such a sum each month were to sponsor a child abroad (you can choose which country btw) it helps more than that one child (and the family) away from appalling poverty.

Thanks rabbitygirl. I`ve written down plan-uk as well. I was in Delhi (work) on Saturday morning on my way from the airport to the hotel. There were loads of kids on their way to school. They were immaculately dressed in their uniforms and looked quite happy and enthusiastic but they were walking past the most appalling poverty. Then we got out of town and went past the rubbish dumps where the little kids that can`t afford education live. Makes you think. Even £10 a month would make a huge difference. That`s the price of two glasses of wine in the pub!
