Lulworth Castle

I recently visited Lulworth Castle (Dorset), destroyed by fire in 1929. I am wondering what caused the fire.  It does not say on the website.  An explanatory panel in the castle said the fire started on one of the upper floors, but a video they were showing gave the impression it started in the kitchen because at the end, there was a close up of a kitchen fire.  Does anybody know any more please?

I've been searching through my many Dorset books but sadly all they mention is 'a disastrous fire' - which is what you already know.

The only thing I can suggest is that you telephone the Castle and speak to someone who has a sound knowledge of the history. It's a bit odd that it wasn't mentioned on the video - but perhaps no-one knows for sure.

The guide book I read, which had a few photos of the old Lulworth Castle, spoke also about the seven disastrous fires that occurred in country houses in the same year (1929)

I thought at the time they blamed slovenly electricification.

In parts of Dorset at that time, it was 50 v DC - dont ask me how I know
