lower case p - e.g. 50p
Furthermore, 'pence' is plural. The singular is 'penny'. Same answer, though - one penny is 1p, 50 pence is 50p.

The reason why �, $, and the Euro sign aren't letters is because they come before numbers and otherwise they might be confused with say roads (like M25) or regions of cities (like E1).
