I have no clue how the US systems would work, I suspect it's quite different from the Danish ;0) So I have no idea if you can go some sort of "official" way, but maybe you can look in to it. I mean maybe he recieves a pension from the army, and if he did, would the military give you any infomation, Social security number, etc.
Hope you find him!

Thank you very much, everyone. Kaktus, that was one of my first ports of call but there is no way the Marine Corps would tell me that info (quite rightly). I contacted the local branch of the VVA quite some time ago and they kindly offered to ask around for me but my friend wasn't a member all those years ago and my guess is, he's not much of a 'joiner'.
Rod and Ouisch - thanks, those look like very helpful sites, even if I have to make scattergun phone calls to everyone with his name. The most frustrating this is that there is a website with his family name that mentions they are looking for him in the little snippet of info I get when I Google it - but the damn website seems to be defunct or the server is permanently down!!
Thanks again - I'll keep on plodding.
