I think Billy Butlin gave a prize to the winner of a walking race from Lands End to John O'Groats.

There was a lot of publicity for an 'eccentric' woman who was a vegetarian. I can't remember if she was the winner.
it would have been almost certainly inspired by Don Thompson winning gold in the 50km walk at the Rome Olympics in 1960 http://en.wikipedia.o...on_Thompson_(athlete)

With Billy Butlin being involved it probably had more a feel of 'They shoot horses, don't they?' than 'Chariots of Fire'.
Yes, I remember Dr Barbara Moore did it in the 60s
The eccentric woman was Dr Barbara Moore.

Didnt Ian Botham also do Lands End to Johno Groats ?
Dont think it was a race though. Just for charity. I would love to do something like that if I had the time. Stopping off at lots of nice places along the way. It would probably take me months to do though
Yes he did, walked right past my front door fact!
''in fact''
That's interesting Micmak, I hadn't heard of this nonsense: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breatharian

Wiley Brooks is interesting, I especially like this bit:

On his website, Brooks states that his potential followers must first prepare by combining the junk food diet with the meditative incantation of five magic "fifth-dimensional" words which appear on his website, some of which are words from Kundalini yoga.[25][26] In the "5D Q&A" section of his website Brooks claims that cows are fifth-dimensional (or higher) beings that help mankind achieve fifth-dimensional status by converting three-dimensional food to five-dimensional food (beef).[27] In the "Question and Answer" section of his website, Brooks explains that the "Double Quarter-Pounder with Cheese" meal from McDonald's possesses a special "base frequency" and that he thus recommends it as occasional food for beginning breatharians.[28] He then goes on to reveal that Diet Coke is "liquid light".[28] Prospective disciples are asked after some time following the junk food/magic word preparation to revisit his website in order to test if they can feel the magic.[26]
Here's his website: http://www.breatharian.com/home.html

Very strange man.

We'd better get our walking boots on if we want to do any serious walking. He says the March equinox of 2013 will see the start of the ascension process.
Was Dr Barbara Moore from London?.
That was the name of our family GP at that time.

This is a bit thin on details but she could well have been.
