What should a woman wear to a play in New York City? For a matinee and for an evening performance.

Dress code has gotten embarrassingly lax on Broadway of late. A matinee you can certainly be almost as casual as you wish. Evening performance it's best if you wear at least slacks and an appropriate blouse. You'll probably see an array of dress there.

You can never go wrong by dressing up, particularly if you're going out for a nice dinner afterwards.

If you are travelling light to NY, wear your best thing to both. Suppose it's a black dress and jacket, or if it's a suit - wear a different blouse on each occasion.  Whatever black shoes you have would be OK for either.  The bag - you could do bigger for the matinee to allow for any bits you have bought during the day, but a more sophisticated small one for the evening.  Nearly black tights for evening, nude-coloured for the matinee.  Just because others sound as though they might be in jeans and trainers, you don't have to follow.

 I Have been to new york seven times and was there a

few weeks ago and saw plays on broadway the dress

was varied but mostly just ordinary, i travel light and

take a suit for theatre but on the street and subways best to be casual and alert really but a great place

to visit and lots to see if your first visit enjoy

and best seen walking or bus but subways are o.k.

I saw Lion King on Broadway several years ago. In the interval I ordered two glasses of what they called champagne - and had to drink from a plastic glass.
Ask yourself how dressed up do you have to be to drink from plastic. Hope you enjoy the shows!
