It would appear that most of the childhood heroes are now coming out of the closet.
Will Batman get married to Robin, is Superman also gay, is Super Woman a Lesbian, and what will happen to He-Man?
I think I will stick with my Dandy and Beano (and don't anyone say, "I thought you only read the Daily Mail"), you know where you are with Desperate Dan and Lord Snooty.

Also, DC just last year re-launched all its main titles in The New 52 range (Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, JLA, etc.) because the canon back-stories were getting incredibly convoluted. So now's a pretty good time to alter the sexuality of a main character if they're going to do it.
While they don't necessarily deserve the golden reputation sometimes attributed to them (especially in how they've treated women in the past), superhero comics have for a long time been pushing the envelope on introducing issues like this to younger readers. Consider the commentary on race relations in the X-Men comics of the early 70s, for instance.
