Can anyone recommend a good place to start looking for details of a ancestor born in Bolton in 1866?

If you've never done any geneology research before I suggest that you get a book from your local library on the subject.  There are also a number of magazines devoted to this subject, get your self down to Smiths

There is plenty of information available on the internet, like the  1901 census :www.1901census.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ and the birth marriages and death indexes http://www.1837online.com/

but it is a lot easier if you know what you are doing!  There may also be records held in Bolton (if you're in the area) either at the library, town hall or local studies centre and there will also be a local genealogy group which you can join even if you don't live in the area.

i found out lots through www.genesconnected.co.uk (com) (part of freinds reunited).

Hi, you should also try www.familysearch.org which is run by the Mormons.  It is a very good site and has the 1881 census with details of other family members at the address.  It is also free to use and a great place to start your search.

Other free sites which are very good are:

www.freebmd.org.uk

www.lancashirebmd.org.uk

Thanks for all the answers. The 1901 census was a good link, haven't got round to trying all the others yet. I appreciate your help.
