There is plenty of information available on the internet, like the 1901 census :www.1901census.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ and the birth marriages and death indexes http://www.1837online.com/
but it is a lot easier if you know what you are doing! There may also be records held in Bolton (if you're in the area) either at the library, town hall or local studies centre and there will also be a local genealogy group which you can join even if you don't live in the area.
Hi, you should also try www.familysearch.org which is run by the Mormons. It is a very good site and has the 1881 census with details of other family members at the address. It is also free to use and a great place to start your search.
