Does Anybody Write Letters Anymore?

I don't mean letter of complaint, I mean writing to friends and relatives - seems in this day and age with texts and IM's and emails hardly anybody bothers anymore. I noticed my handwriting when writing out cards at Christmas has become atrocious! My children know I'd be very disappointed in them if they didn't write thank you letters to people who have sent them gifts (I mean people far away not somebody face to face) I used to have 3 pen-friends when I was young and I loved receiving their letters

I actually have just bought a card for my son to write a thankyou to his grandfather for his Xmas money, but you're right, we dont write enough. probably explains my my son's handwriting is so bad, they are even allowed to use laptops to type their homework.

I only ever write either to elderly people or people who don't have a computer/ smart phone etc, shopping lists or love letters.

I used to write to some people quite a lot, but that's all been replaced by emails, which are the way the mail used to be - 6 deliveries a day so you could hold conversations in writing.

Very rare otherwise that I put pen to paper.

I always write letters as I really enjoy doing so. They are usually long ones, too.

One of my closest friends from Uni lives a couple of hundred miles away and we still write to each other rather than email, skype, carrier pigeon etc. I love getting her letters and we still write on the college lined notepads!

My father has beautifu handwriting and my grandfather did copperplate, he used to write all the entries to the local church's registers, births, death and marriages. My writing of late looks like a drunken spider has been let loose!

I always hated writing letters and only ever wrote 'duty' letters for thanks or in reply to others writing to me, aged relatives, etc.

Emails have meant that I now keep in touch more frequently and can 'chat'.

I phone my elderly relatives and have long chats (even the ones in Australia).

I hate text messages and will not communicate in this way unless urgent.

As for children, a phone call in thanks for a gift - or an email is acceptable nowadays in my opinion.

My writing is a bit haphazard. I do think it's because I type more than write these days.

My old boss's was appalling though. Always thought he should have been a doctor. I was the only one in the office that could read it, any notes he left for people would come back to me for translating.

My dad had lovely delicate writing. Brings a lump to my throat when I come across anything he wrote.

Quite honestly, I suppose that I believe that as long as you communicate then that the method doesn't really matter. And I have never had a love letter Nox :o(

I used to write so much when I was younger, and it was the only real way to stay in touch with some people, write thank you notes etc...

I very rarely do nowadays, mainly texting and some emails and I keep in touch with a lot of people via Facebook.

Mum has got into texting now and even my dad managed to work out how to send a text message to me yesterday after getting a phone at Christmas (he didn't realise flight mode was on, bless him) :)

Ahhh love letters, not had one of them for a while :)

I always remember the school days of things like that. I even had one lad sneak a cassette he had made for me as a way of asking me out into my school bag.

I mostly email these days but do have a couple of friends who I still write to and also will write a letter for bereavements and similar occasions.
I've still got all the letters that my DH sent me. One day I will read them again.

Mr LL sent me a postcard once and that was before we were an item. It was a rude one from his holiday - no hint of romance!!

I write lots of letters, but not by hand. Theey'd be illegible if I did. But I print off and post about a hundred letters a year to friends, especially at Christmas - and no, they are not the usual round-robin family news stuff.
