Christening present

I need some inspiration.  My best friend had a baby girl a few weeks ago and she's asked me to be her Godmother which means so much to me.  Anyway, the Christening is in September and I really want to get baby Jessica something really special which she can keep forever.  I know there are traditional things to get for Christenings but I'm not sure what they are so if anyone can tell me that would be very helpful.  Or any other ideas for something special would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you!

Bibles are the most traditional, but if you go to any jewellers you will find a large range of (usually silver) things such as money boxes/piggy banks, photo frames, etc. I have bought for others (and my daughter also had bought for her) very nice treasuries of nursery rhymes or another child's book that makes a good keepsake. I also think that doing something like planting a tree is a nice gesture (life, growth and all that).

I tended to buy something silver, for my nieces it was a small silver bracelet that they could wear for the day.  For the boys I bought that, or a silver piggy bank.

As well as this I bought a miniature collectors set of Beatrix Potter books, in a little box.

You can get a star named after your godchild, they send you a beautiful certificate and a diagram of where the star is.  On the cert you can put the name of the child and the date of birth. (or anything else you want). I got it done for my nephew and niece, both of whom live in Australia, and I asked the good people at the star registry to give them each star in the southern hemisphere and in the same constellation.  I thiink the website is starregistry.co.uk, but put a search in and you'll have no prob.

How about some Premium Bonds, you can buy them in blocks of �100 and although never making interest they remain the same value always with a chance of a win, and when Jessica is old enough she could cash them in or keep them if she wishes! You never know, she could win �1 million thanks to you! You probably need to entrust them to an adult in their name until she's old enough to own them tho'! Best to check the rules.

oh nicola-red, you've made my stomach turn over. I used to wear my christening bracelet when I was a child. However I fell down a slide (the steps bit, not the slide bit) and fell onto cinders. The bracelet cut into my hand quite badly and I still have an awful scar and you can even see the grey cinders still in there (I've also got some cinders in my knee from the same incident).

I'd buy a piece of jewellry (maybe a charm bracelet and you can then buy charms to go on it as presents during the years). Or maybe an id bracelet (my Gran had one made for me when I was born).

Other than that how about a set of books which she can enjoy when older (Boxed set of Narnia books is nice).

How about a cross stitch - it doesn't have to be an elaborate one - if you are crafty.  Or a nomination bracelet which are all the rage at the moment - a bit like a charm bracelet but nothing 'dangly'.  I got my girls one and put their initial and birth sign on to begin with then added ' I love you' .  There are loads to choose from - you should be able to get them at good jewellers.

How about a silver photo frame, engraved with her name and date of the Christening - you can add a picture of you holding her at the christening at a later date.

Then she has something she can use forever...
