Why exactly do people wear buttonholes at weddings? What is the ettiquette regarding the two different colours?

I have had a good look around th web and can't find any reference to etiquette regarding colours. My copy of the victorian flower garden says that then the tradition was to distribute wedding favours while the register was being signed and that these were an acorn with silver leaves for the gentlemen and orange blossom with silver leaves and white ribbon for the ladies....so the buttonhole tradition does not seem to be of longstanding either!...at least not in england
