/// Leanne Staven, who had come for the protest, said that she had not come to the mosque to cause trouble but because "We need a voice". "I think white British who have any concerns feel we can't speak freely," she said. ///
This I agree with, "we need a voice" and who else is there for us but the EDL, whether you agree with their politics or how they go about things?
Nice to see some Muslims are prepared to speak out at last against their radical fellow Muslims.
/// Ismail Miah, president of York mosque, added: "Under the banner of Islam there are very different politics: democratic politics, the far right, left, central, all over. You can't target a whole community for what one or two people have done. ///
But I am afraid Mr Miah there are many more than just two, who have carried out Murders, Bombings and other acts of Terrorism on our streets, so unfortunately as is always the case, the majority must suffer for the acts of the minority.

some on the left seem to brook no idea that one can have a different viewpoint, without using the racism card. If i voice an opinion that doesn't accord with some either on AB or outside i would be roundly castigated.
So why should we tolerate these misogynists, men who would cast women and women's rights back to the stone age.

"I always find it odd how the left seem to favour on the side of Islam, even though it represents everything that leftism is against! "
That's kind of the point the York mosque is trying to counter. They say that Islam hosts political views of all kinds - extreme right, far left, and everything in between.
As I said on Jake's thread, I believe religion is an enemy of human progress. But it's just not as simple as muslim = bad.
I also find it rather uninspiring how 5,000 Muslims meet in the capital - and for some it's hardly any/not enough; Muslim Council of GB condemns the attack - it's not representative; York Mosque comes out against extremism - they're just a minority.
It's difficult to know what would appease those who are unable to see that the Muslim community harbours people other than terrorists.

the only way we knew that 5,000 Muslims had met was via sp's post i think.. reported in a Belfast newspaper? it was held in a Mosque in Morden, which holds 10,000. if it's an informal gathering, one to offer specific prayers, only those attending would know it happened.
Did you see any info anywhere else about it because i haven't, we would have remained ignorant of it had sp not posted on it, so you can't applaud an action if you don't know it happened, perhaps that does or does not make sense...
