External Webcams For Security - Feasible?

My router etc is in the loft.

I want to install two webcams outside - one at the front, one at the rear of the house. Ideally I will be able to monitor these cameras from any pc, my tablet and my smartphone and would like email alerts if any motion is detected.

My wifi network isn't the most reliable at the moment, I'm trying to find the cause, but the wired network is very good.

My question is - can these cameras be connected by ethernet?

Also, webcam recommendations will be most appreciated.
