I really can't get my head around why people seem to love to fight and argue with each other throughout certain topics within this website. I only have to read a couple of 'up to date' threads and you see constant arguing.

Do some people thrive of this sort of thing?

Which threads are you looking at diz? Some topics are good for "debate" which isn't the same as fighting.
I think in certain topics, there are some very polarised views and often things get heated.

Also to my mind it seems harsher on screen than a lively face to face debate.

Well I'm struggling to see the issue people have with AOG for starters. Maybe it's just my missed perception.
I said that myself quite recently. Think he gets a hard time
There are some people on this site (and other sites) whose sole purpose is to cause aggro. Then to sit back and wait for the bullets to fly. It happens often. My Dad would say "they make the bullets for others to fire"

I don't venture into news very much (usually get in bother when I do ) - my perception of AOG (who I have a lot of respect for) is that he knows precisely how to couch his questions to get the temperatures raised.

Most times it works and occasionally gets a bit personal, which I don't care for either.

dizmouk, do you not watch news panel shows or things like question time? Its human nature where opposing views exist. Its life.

Triggs, it was an often misquoted view of Victorian values, as outlined here..

re: "You may have heard, as I did, that the Victorians were so strait-laced and repressed, that they put frilly covers around the legs of their pianos so as not to stir up improper thoughts about limbs in the minds of people around those items of furniture. /Not true, and the story of how it came to be believed is quite interesting, and somewhat amusing..."... ...
@Triggs
Yes it is, end of!

It's just a clatter of wooden swords most of the time - in the "debate" topics such as News and Soc & Culture there's always been some "scuffles". I don't know if we could change that, or even if we wanted to.

I do on occasion. I just feel sometimes the abuse is not actually required as by the looks at some of the threads it throws them completely off topic.
If you see a scuffle which seems to be ruining the thread, report it and we'll have a look.
Sometimes throwing things off topic is a debating tactic, as is (it seems) playing the victim and highlighting perceived persecution.
