Trying To Identify A Rose
Spurred on by Ann's thread I've wanted to ask if anyone can help me identify an old rose. It was here when we moved in so at least 10 years old. It may be a hybrid-T that hasn't been pruned or a climber, difficult to tell because it's about 8 feet high against a wall with a lot of bare old woody stems at the bottom. It's the bloom that's most distinctive It's a rich deep velvety dark crimson/burgundy hybrid-t type but it's the rose perfume - I can't imagine you can get a more concentrated old fashioned rose scent, it blows you away. The blooms are large and borne singly so not a floribunda type at all. I've looked through books but not got far. There's no reason to think it's a rare variety, anyone got any ideas?

Deep Secret? http://www.c lassicroses. co.uk/produc ts/roses/dee p-secret/ a wonderful deep red rose. My late father's favourite rose was Uncle Walter but he was always sorry that it had very little scent. He would have loved Deep Secret. Uncle Walter is actually darker than the picture here....

Yep, Rocky that's the one I would suggest too - highly scented, Crimson Glory Hybrid Tea:

Thank you ladies, interesting that you've both come up with the same variety. The description of the scent looks spot on however (and I know it might be my monitor settings) it's not as light a red as that, more the colour of a deep dark red wine and has more petals that don't open out (unlike the one in Rocky's link). It also flowers pretty much non-stop right up to Xmas. I will take a picture next time one's out, should have thought about that before.

How old is your house Prudie? The reason I ask is we have a rose that sounds identical to yours, the scent is amazing, like no other rose... Our rose was planted in this garden in 1937 ! We don't know the name but call it Mrs T's Rose, that's the lady we bought the house off...It's much darker than the photo shows, the flash kicked in when I took the picture.

woof I'll have a look at that when I get home, again it might be monitor settings, that's not really dark enough, mine is almost like dark burgundy velvet. Hi mazie, I'm at work and the link is blocked so I'll check later; House only about 15 years old but previous owner was a keen gardener so it may not be just a B&Q special!!!
Hmm.. Could be 'Burgundy Ice' at a guess, but the scent is only medium strong..

I'll be interested to see what it eventually turns out to be :-)

I'd guess the same as woofy. I've got a Deep Secret rose and although the blooms fade a little as they age they're darker than the pic in her link, and the perfume is knockout. Shows as darker here...
