I think you might mean Marie Laveau; if so she was a Haitian voodoo practitioner living in New Orleans. I think the original one was around in the late eighteenth century but that there was more than one generation of them with the same name. She's actually mentioned in a song by Fairground Attraction called "Claire", where the singer claims that the woman who has stolen her lover has learned her ways from "that old voodoo".
