1)I would like to know the origin of lapels on jackets. Also, 2) I was told once that they somehow were used to remove mud from being splattered by passing horses. Lastly, 3) Is it true that ruffles/sleeves on shirt were appropriately used for wiping one's nose when a kerchief was unavailable?

can't answer about the origins of lapels but did you know that years ago in glasgow people would sew razor blades inside lapels so if anyone grabbed them by the lapels!!!
