Are the British losing their dress sense?
I have seen many changes in fashion over the decades but people almost inevitably would turn out smartlly dressed. This no longer seems to apply...

//I am feminine in my dress sense// I totally agree with NoMercy on this one. I was only saying the other day it is rare to see females in skirts these days, except for some of the very elderly. I think this is such a shame and it's so hard to find pretty skirts in the shops, even Per Una at M&S don't sell many now. I do wear jeans but much prefer to wear skirts, they are...

No.
IMO there has always been dodgy looking fashions. Given that there is little new under the sun, chances are whatever is around now are variations on a theme that cycles round regularly.
No. I think people like to feel comfy now to do day to day things, but for events people still dress to the nines :)
I only iron for functions... mostly leave the dress in the closet.
No, I think the lack of everyday formality in dress is quite a good thing - dress to suit the occasion is my motto.
I can turn up anywhere and look hot, even wearing a bin liner (apparently) so no the fashion doesn't need to worry from me.

People are people and follow their own culture desires... etc.. and dress diversely simple as. Brits how not lost our way, it's the way we roll.
how *have
What dress sense, wearing masks, men wearing skirts are you joking?
i blame the swinging sixties where anything went, including our ability to put colours together.

My father wouldn't answer the door in his shirt sleeves - he always put his jacket on.
My mother wouldn't go out without a hat or scarf.
Polished shoes were a must for all the family.

Nowadays, shapeless 'jogging bottoms' and trainers seem to be normal wear.
Yep , bring back Oxford bags and platform shoes ,for men .
Remember those ?

I'm thinking about this as I sit here in a string-vest, y-fronts and fluffy bunny slippers.
I don't think we are tbh.

;o)
I blame Brexit.

Once we sever our ties with Paris and Milan, we will revert to being a nation where the men have knotted hankies on their heads.

We already have.!

Lounge suits with open necked shirts. Knees sticking out of Jeans. Lack of colour co-ordination.....etc.

Add to that for men, scruffy looking long hair, designer stubble and for women completely unnaturally coloured hair and wearing fanniminies, to complete a picture of pride-less people on parade.

Hans.

I'll have you know my string vest is a Designer one!!
This is one of those 'It was better in my day' threads ain't it?

You couldn't get Designer String Vests in the 'good old days' Zacs.
Many people do not seem to have any appropriate clothes that they wear when going somewhere nice. Two of the most successful marketing ploys of all time relate to clothes:

The first is persuading people that trousers which were originally designed as working clothes (denim jeans) which were suitable for doing rugged or dirty work (e.g. rounding up cattle or laying under motor vehicles) were fashion items that could be worn to a decent restaurant on a night out. (And don’t even start me on the torn knees).

The second (and probably more lucrative) was getting people to buy “sportswear” when the wearers had absolutely no intention of taking part in any sport. I always chuckle when I see an 18 stone chubby wearing his “trainers” when his idea of training is downing six pints of lager in readiness for a night out. I love the “track suits” when the only track they see with their owners is the local dog track. I’m amused the way that “jogging bottoms” are produced in sizes up to 8XL.

These two things alone have done more to engender an air of scruffiness among much (though not all) of the UK population. Lots of blokes look as if they have just come from a building site directly to a half decent restaurant. Many of the women with them look as if they were on the way to the gym but got sidetracked.

But before I suffer a good kicking (for the second time in 24 hours) many people do make an effort to take pride in their appearance. But I would say they are outnumbered by those who look as if they got dressed in the dark.
I don't think we are, no. It's just that times change and it was far more formal back in the day.
