They are entirely independent and an absolute pain in the wotsit.
There are two ways to get rid of them - bar them from calling your phone (if you have that option), or call the Telephone Preference Service and have your number removed from 'dialling lists' - then it is illegal for them to call you. The TPS is 0845 070 0707.

BBC Watchdog- I have just submitted a request as I get these calls from 2 companies - mostly annoying whole abroad! Please all do the same and we can stop it!"!!!
Hi, a quick update. I had quite a long (and friendly!) chat with one of the callers from Landmark and he said that the managers at the call centre routinely put everyone's phone number back into the dialler, even when you tell the caller to remove you from the list - it is a hard-sell tactic to wear you down so you'll eventually listen to the sales pitch.
He stressed that they are not connected to an actual Network and they source our phone numbers independently - he would not say where from though.
As before, the only way to stop them calling is contacting the Tel Pref Service and having it removed from ALL lists - but this means your own network/bank/credit card/gas/electric etc. will be barred from calling you. Alternatively, just hang up without saying anything!
