I wouldn't be so sure of that danny.

Every time a measure is taken to curb smoking, someone always says that. But after a while, smoking rates go down.

People said the same thing about banning advertising, and stopping smoking in enclosed spaces.

But in the end, these measures seem to work.

Quite right, Danny. I smoke, but only in the privacy of my own home, of which I am the sole occupant. I do not smoke in public. The only person who might come to any harm through my smoking is myself.

I'm pretty sure that the tobacco companies are not doing this in order to cut down on the amount of tobacco they sell.

Danny....the only reason that the American Tobacco companies are doing this is because the Court has ordered that they do so.

These Companies have long lost any sense of self-justice, as the products that they produce, kills their own customers, all over the world, leaving them to attract new customers every year, most of them now in backward countries, and mostly children. They have no sense of shame whatsoever.

I doubt very much private companies would respond to a policy put in place by a the Govt. . It would have to be enforced by law. Maybe a law resulting from a policy but never a policy.

Much as I would like to see the companies feet held to the fire, smoking is already declining in Britain, so allowing the tobacco industry years of tying the Government up in legal knots, in never-ending Court cases, as happened in the States. It might be better to divert any money to more education.

But I continue to be worried about smoking rates amongst children and young adults, especially the less well educated.

On the housing estate where I live, I am in a distinct minority when it comes to smoking. As soon as most kids get to their early to mid teens, they seem inevitably to start smoking.

When I started smoking, it was entirely down to peer pressure. If you didn't smoke, you were viewed as a bit of a wimp and not one of the cook kids. I think that's less the case these days, but that's where the major effort needs to be addressed. So anything which contributes to that gets my approval.

Precisely, Mamya. Whilst smoking is more prevalent among lower income groups it is not restricted to them. The Queen of Denmark is renowned for her chain smoking. I do not consider myself to be less well-educated, having two degrees and two post-graduate diplomas. My life, my choice.
