Can anyone suggest any books to read (fiction or fact) where women in Britain are either sold or go voluntarily because they have no home/money to go to, say Canada or America to marry men living in the wild regions?

The Ginger Tree by Oswald Wynd is the story of a young Scottish girl who travels to China by boat to marry an English soldier. The marriage encounters difficulties. The story spans from the turn of the 20th century to the Second World War.

This was made into a series by BBC TV with Samantha Bond taking the role of Mary McKenzie.

I remember a film based on this, starring Rita Tushingham as a mute girl whose only "affection" from her gruff woodsman is "woman, clean the house". Don't know if you want to extend to films, or maybe this was based on a book!
