I went to see "Shakespeare in Love" at Chichester Festival Theatre yesterday, and the play finished in the same manner as most productions at Shakespeare's Globe in London - that is with a very brief musical dance during the final bow to which the audience join in with synchronised applause.

That at the Chichester Theatre did not seem as enthusiastically taken up (e.g. the couple next to me refrained) as at The Globe.

Do you (or would you) participate on such occasions ?

Sounds 'naff' to me.
It's my favourite pastime as it happens
That and sticking pins in my eyes
Is this it Canary?

Naff or not, i would participate, its all part of the occasion. If people are too 'stuffy' to get involved then maybe they shouldnt go.

I've seen quite a few TV shows recorded where we were expected to join in. At first i was a bit 'oh no' but after a while i realised i was the one looking silly for not joining in.
it's authentic, plays in Shakespearean times finished with a little jig. I don't know about their clapping habits, though.
Always, Canary......as I do when I go to the cinema for a live relay....even if I'm the only one clapping.... :-)
i would, lovely theatre by the way..
I would but it hurts my hands....I am deffo a foot stomper when the occasion permits though.
I would join in.
Foot stomping is good, Woof!

I suppose some find it difficult to join in things like this but when you look at them just sitting there you wonder.....did you enjoy it....did you not get lost in the performance......or maybe as my mother would have said.....do they have a penny on themselves.....x

Sunnydave: Not quite what I meant, nice try though ;-D

jno: Yes, you're right about the jig. I do wonder if the groundlings reacted by clapping to the beat.
