school systems in the US/Australia

Not sure if this is the right topic but can anyone tell me about the year/grade systems in schools in the USA and Australia. Is Australia the same as in the Uk (ie would a year 10 in Oz be the same age as a year 10 in the UK?) In America how old are you when you are in 1st grade, 2nd grade etc and what are freshmans/sophomores?

My Aussie mate who is staying with me at the mo says that you start school at age 5-6 which is grade 1,1 - 7 is primary school and 7 - 12 is high school. You leave aged 17 in grade 12 to go to uni or get a job. Both of us have no idea about english grade systems...we had 1st year to sixth form when I was a mere child!!! Hope this helps. Not sure about US.
