Not long posted on my thread RE: my anal skin tags.
I have absolutely NO embarrassment about dropping my trousers for a GP to examine either my genitles or my 'arris.
Had a testicle cyst removed in my 20's and 2 colonoscopies in my 40's...no different than having my ingrown toenail removed when I was 17.
BUT for some people the embarrassment of having their 'bits' examined is excruciating to the point of death
(Jade Goody for example RE: smear test)
Why are we so embarrassed when it comes to our health?
Ive always drummed it into my kids for years, that a doctor or nurse examining them is so everyday normal, it's as normal for them as it is for us making a cup of tea. Totally normal for them, so we should remember that and let them get on with it.
Ive drummed it into my five sons to examine their testacles every time they shower. Get to know the shape, lumps and bumps, so that anything different will be immediately apparent.
Mammograms aren't really embarrassing, except that someone is hoicking your breasts about and squeezing the life out of them, but they are uncomfortable procedures. Hence the crestfallen face when the appointment letter turns up.
For many women smears are really painful....not the "mild discomfort" that is the way is often described. For younger women mammograms can be genuinely painful too. As a woman gets older and her breast tissue becomes less dense then it becomes less painful but if you are small breasted, the pull on neck skin to get the breast into a position where it can be squashed is no picnic.....like a really large "chinese burn"....can I say that?
