Best Car For Living In A Hilly Area.

I've just moved to the isle of Wight, and I'm worried all the hills are too much for my peaguot 107. As such, I'm considering getting a new car, but I'm not sure what I should be looking for. The most important factors are the environmental impact and how reliable/ cheap to fix they are. I was thinking possibly a mini, but I worry they will use too much fuel. I don't want anything too big, and I can't have an electronic car as I'm renting.

I know that you are concerned about environmental impact but due to it being hilly how about a small diesel powered car. Diesel engines put out a lot more torque than an equivalent sized petrol engine and don't use as much fuel.
