Just watched this on BBC 4. I had forgotten how lovely it was. Penelope Keith was wonderful as Margo Leadbetter. (And there wasn’t a swear word in it).

I really liked that programme, I loved the episode where Margo sent her whole Christmas delivery back, because the tree was not the right size.

I know that TGL was, and still is, massively popular, but its appeal completely by-passed me, then and now.

I get the concept, but I simply saw Tom as a self-righteous bullying nobody, and his hamster-cheeked annoyingly voiced wife as the proverbial 'little woman', doing as she was told, and kidding herself that she enjoyed it.

I didn’t get that impression at all Andy, and I’m very much a ‘free woman’. I’m sure I would have picked up on any male chauvinism.

Mozz..... I have the shovel...the dungarees and the wellies....not to mention the boggy, rain sodden bit of land and the occasional visiting sheep and donkey.....so corn away..... :-)

I always saw them as equals, but even if that was so, Margot was definitely the alpha partner when compared to Jerry, so you had an example of each.

I still find Vyvyan's rant about TGL in The Young Ones hilarious though.

We were talking the other morning about things that wouldn't be made today. Something as innocuous as our breakfast watching, Last of the Summer Wine would incur wrath because of Compo's sexual harressment of Nora Batty.

Surely it should be 'hit me on the bottom with a Woman's Weekly', still miss Victoria Wood, every time I hear the words 'sash window' the visuals are amazing.

It was a lovely series. I liked 'To the Manor Born' as well. In fact, I enjoyed lots of TV programs in those days. Now there's hardly anything new I watch, just lots of old repeats mainly. I'm afraid I don't find most modern comedy, drama etc. entertaining. I don't like modern versions of the Classics either. However with DVD's and less popular TV channels, I find lots I can enjoy.
