Britain's also adjusting its figures as it goes along - have they counted the care home deaths yet? People don't really have systems in place to count the toll from sudden countrywide epidemics; it doesn't surprise me that China hasn't.

Figures for both cases and deaths are bound to be underestimates. For example in many cases hospital deaths only recorded. It doesn’t necessarily point to a “cover-up”

Probably still too low, although whether that is conspiracy or ignorance is anyone's guess. I've also had my eye on Iran's death toll, which may well be equally significantly under-reported.

Actually, so is the UK's, most likely. The official death toll still only tracks hospital deaths among confirmed cases, and to get a true count we may well need to add about 50% more or so.

Fair. We may never know for certain. I *can* believe they brought it under control rapidly, as clearly the harshest of lockdowns, in which literally nobody is permitted to leave their home, will virtually guarantee that the spread is stopped, and that's what I understood happened in Wuhan. But I don't believe they'll have seriously reacted in time, or tested enough people, or just straight-up been honest enough, to keep the death toll in only four digits.

No information that comes out of China can be trusted. They've adjusted them upwards because they weren't believable enough in light of the numbers being reported elsewhere.

The first steps taken by the "authorities" in Wuhan was to stop all travel to other parts of China and particularly the 7 cities that were identified as essential to the Chinese economy. Meanwhile flights to the rest of the World, including Britain, were facilitated, without checks or hindrance, after the Chinese New Year Gatherings. The Chinese knew how virulent this virus was before anyone else in the World even knew it existed. Whilst flights out of China carried on apace, it was soon arranged for all inward passengers to be rigorously tested. All that remains is to nail the truth about where it originated.

ethnic ex pat chinese are saying out by a factor of ten - 40 000 instead of 4000

but someone tell me - - why or wht advantage is there for a govt to lie so outrageously to a population who knows it is lying ?

China needs to get back to work Peter, as we all do, so there's an incentive to say that we're over the curve, and it's all good. Everyone seems to be working to a three month timescale. Lockdown lifting will be rolled out at the same time and in the same order as it was imposed.

You will be told to get back to work and shopping but maintain social distancing. I'm not sure how that will work. It's bad enough trying to shop at the moment when they're limiting the number that can be in the store at any time.
