I wonder how many will, the government will check and its a 1k fine if you don't, some may work from home and some will need to either take more holiday or go unpaid, was it wirth it for a holiday. ?

If somebody had paid, say, £5k for a 2020 holiday in 2019, and the planes were still flying and the accommodation was still open (and as it stands Greece is still open), I think your question is wrong.

The correct question is why on earth wouldn’t you go?

If it was a case of lose £5k or risk a £1k fine, well it’s a no-brainier isn’t it.

with hindsight maybe not, but they weren't to know this at the time. Greece wasn't on the warning list, so they did nothing illegal or improper, just unlucky.

There is a section on AB that has a major issue with foreign holidaymakers and there's no arguing with them. In this case it is just unfortunate but people can equally catch it and run the risk of passing it on by congregating in a pub in Cardiff (which I'm sure some do). Nobody went against advice by going to Greece. It's just bad luck.

The average daily number of new cases across the whole of Greece over the last seven days was just over 200. Not surprisingly most of the cases are on the mainland. Today, on the islands, 15 new cases were reported on on Crete, 7 on Lesbos, 2 on Zante, 2 in the Cyclades (the specific islands are not confirmed). Over the past seven days in the UK the average daily number of new infections was 1,244. In the last seven days in Birmingham there were over 300 new cases. So the question really is this: why should I be forced to quarantine (with the threat of £1,000 fine for a breach) when returning from a holiday in Zante where a week's total of new cases may struggle to reach double figures when I can take a week long trip to Birmingham where cases over the same period are measured in hundreds? During which of those two trips am I more likely to contract a virus which I might pass on to my elderly relatives (or anybody else)?

I agree NewJudge, but unfortunately the rules are for those return to the uk from abroad, I certainly wouldn't going abroad anywhere at the moment, I can't afford to self isolate for 2 weeks both monetary wise and I have elderly parents one with severe dementia who I have to visit.

no, i agree that its silly you can travel to somewhere in the uk and not self isolate but go abroad and you have to, but those are the rules and if you take that risk then you suffer the consequences, my hospital will never be the same again because of this.

I understand your not taking foreign trips because of having to quarantine, Webbo. As I hope I have explained, the UK's quarantine arrangements are absurd. Nonetheless they are what they are but that does not make them any less absurd. But I cannot understand your reluctance to travel because of the risk of contracting the virus. At present you stand far more chance of contracting "Summer 'flu" (which can be equally nasty) in the UK than you do of catching Coronavirus. And you stand more chance of catching Coronavirus in many parts of the UK than you do in many of the places where quarantine is required upon return.

Most of the treatment we carry out is whats called an AGP, aerosol generated procedure, lots of mist and droplets in the air(its a dental hospital) once this type of procedure has been done the room must be left for 1 hour then cleaned for 45 mins before we see the next patient.
we are a teaching hospital (university) we have approximately 80 chairs on the second floor, we can now only use less than half due to spacing, most of our appointments and returning patients will only be consultations.

When you say your hospital will never be the same again, are you envisaging these arrangements continuing forever? If so, never mind about paying for people to have half price dinners, the government needs to crack on and double the number of hospitals in the country. The arrangements you describe are clearly unsustainable and need to be ended forthwith. At present the population is five times more likely to contract "summer 'flu" than Covid. The vast majority of people who contract Covid will see little or no significant symptoms. Those at risk of doing so must take extra precautions but at present establishments like your hospital are failing in their primary function. The government will hopefully soon accept that this virus is here for some time (as virtually every virus is). Once that is accepted some of the lunacy that is currently being exhibited will cease.

Not in the slightest ilm, I don't think I've started a single thread pontificating my views (unlike the countless we've had about foreign travel, there's even another one going on now and it is pointless to argue with some people). I also rarely argue my case more than one or two responses. Furthermore I rarely post snitty or inflammatory comments either although I've been here enough years to realise who is likely to.
